Getting Started with Claude — Signup to First Chat in 5 Minutes
Hi, I’m Eddie. The hardest part for first-time AI users is the blank-page moment: “Where do I even start?” Here’s what I’ve found — 1-minute signup · free tier · one-line first prompt — done in 5 minutes. No credit card. No VPN.
01 · WHATClaude is an AI chatbot in the same lane as ChatGPT
Bottom line. Claude is an AI assistant from Anthropic, a US AI company. Same category as ChatGPT, with particular strengths in long-document reading, summarization, coding, and analysis.
You can use it straight from the browser, and there are iOS and Android apps too. It works globally without a VPN. Free signup, no credit card required.
02 · SIGN UPSignup takes a minute — 3 steps
Bottom line. Signup is genuinely fast. 30 seconds if you use Google, 1 minute via email.
1
Go to claude.ai · Type claude.ai in your browser and click Sign up in the top right. Works from anywhere.
2
Sign in with Google or email · One click with Google. For email, just confirm the verification link.
3
Accept the terms and you’re in · No credit card step. The chat window opens right after signup.
03 · FREE LIMITThe free plan covers most everyday use
Bottom line. If you’re just starting out, the free plan is enough. Only consider Pro once you hit the limit regularly.
Free vs Pro · key differences
What’s the 5-hour rolling window? Your quota resets on a sliding 5-hour clock from your first message. Short questions can run dozens of times, but feeding in a long document burns through it much faster.
04 · FIRST CHATYour first prompt — start like this
Bottom line. Just talk to it like a person in the chat box. No fancy command syntax needed.
First hello
Hi, I’ve never used AI before — what’s a good way for me to start using you?
Draft an email
Write a polite 3-line email letting a coworker know our meeting time has changed.
Summarize text
Summarize the text below in 3 lines. Swap any jargon for plain words.
A line of code
Write a Python function that reads a file and counts the number of lines.
05 · 3 RULES3 things first-time users should know
Bottom line. Knowing these three cuts the “why is this happening” friction in half.
Claude basics · 3 core concepts
1
Conversations carry context — the context window. The same chat remembers what you said earlier, but starting a new chat wipes the slate.
→ Continuing a task? Stay in the same chat. Switching topics? Open a new one.
2
Better prompts get better answers. “Summarize this” is weaker than “Summarize this in 3 lines so a 5th grader can follow it.”
→ Specific instructions = answers closer to what you actually wanted.
3
It can be confidently wrong. Claude sometimes states wrong things with full confidence. Verify anything that matters.
→ Treat current news, legal, and medical info as reference only.
CODAIf I had to nail it in one line
