ChatGPT Mobile Just Broke Below 40% for the First Time
For three years ChatGPT had US mobile to itself. Its DAU share just dropped to 38.7%. Six months ago it was 52%. Here’s where the share went — broken down with Apptopia and StatCounter numbers.
01 · HEADLINEThe #1 spot moved this week
Per Apptopia’s April brief, ChatGPT’s US mobile DAU share fell below 40% for the first time on record. That’s four straight months of decline, and a 14pp drop from 52% six months ago.

02 · WEBConversational AI web traffic — StatCounter
ChatGPT still dominates web referral share, but Gemini is up 4× year over year and Claude doubled in a single month. The chase pace is wildly different.

03 · MOBILEMobile tells a different story
Unlike on the web, in mobile ChatGPT’s share has been cut roughly in half. Gemini, Grok, and Claude all grew at the same time — the market is reshaping into "one leader, four challengers."

Claude was the surprise. Sub-2% in December, 10% four months later. Even more striking: power users spend 139 minutes a day — up from 98 in February — and churn dropped to 12%.
04 · CODINGAI coding tools are reshuffling fast
For developers, ARR growth rate tells a clearer story than raw share. Cursor doubled ARR in three months — that curve is rare in SaaS history.

For reference, Claude Code took "most loved tool" at 46% in JetBrains’ April survey — not #1 by share, but #1 by satisfaction. The other interesting number this week: 70% of developers are running 2–4 AI tools at once.
05 · WHYWhy these shifts happened
"ChatGPT’s absolute user count didn’t shrink. The market just grew faster."
Root cause: total chatbot market grew +5% Feb→Mar and +22% vs September. ChatGPT didn’t capture that growth — Gemini, Claude, and Grok absorbed almost all the new entrants.
"Claude won 70% of OpenAI’s contested enterprise deals."
Root cause: Claude 3.5 → 4.x upgrades plus Claude Code’s #1 developer satisfaction rating dragged mobile app DAU up too. 12% power-user churn is rare retention in the chatbot market.
"DAU 15.3% → 13.5%, downloads −13%. First plateau after six straight months of growth from September."
Root cause: X integration drove the run from 1.6% to 15.2%, but acquiring new users from outside X is structurally hard. A signal that the market is starting to look for "somewhere else to go."
"My takeaway this week: the era of using just one is already over. 70% are running 2–4 in parallel — me too."

The two things to watch next week: whether Claude DAU holds 10%, and whether Grok’s stall was a one-off. Same time next Sunday, I’ll write it up again.
