Why I Mapped Cmd+Space to Raycast Instead of Spotlight: 4 Shortcuts

Bottom line first. Cmd+Space doesn’t trigger Spotlight on my Mac anymore. Raycast took over the same key. No grand reason. The shortcut I hit 30 times a day got a beat faster, and that compounded into a different tool.

Don’t install 100 store extensions. You will, out of curiosity, but you end up back at these 4.

  • Cmd+Space — Trigger Raycast (after disabling Spotlight binding)System Settings → Keyboard Shortcuts: turn off Spotlight, reassign to Raycast
  • Cmd+Shift+V — Clipboard historyScrolls back 7 entries before your last paste. No need for Paste or Maccy on the side.
  • Option+Cmd+← / → — Window left/right half splitNo separate Rectangle install. Built in by default.
  • Cmd+, — Settings, then browse the StoreStart with GitHub / Linear / Color Picker. That’s it.

04 · LIMITHonest downsides

If you’re off macOS or you live in non-English file search, reconsider.

No Windows / Linux build — use PowerToys Run, Albert, or similar instead. Non-English fuzzy search — commands are English-first, so Spotlight occasionally catches non-Latin filenames better. Pro at $8/mo — required if you want AI Chat or team sync.

I swapped my Spotlight shortcut for Raycast, and the free plan was enough for me.

What worked

4 shortcuts cover clipboard and window management too. I uninstalled 3-4 standalone apps.

Still annoying

Non-English file search accuracy. I still reach for Spotlight sometimes.
